This 67 hectare site which covers the former ‘RAF Calveley’ airfield has outline planning permission for circa 1.5 million square feet of industrial development which was proposed to be undertaken in a series of build phases. Earthworks modelling software was utilised in order to achieve a cut / fill balance over the entire site area. A key civil engineering issue on this project was the design of the post development surface water and foul water drainage system - this was due to the lack of drainage infrastructure in the vicinity of the site. Percolation testing confirmed that the site was not suitable for the use of infiltration techniques and, accordingly, detailed negotiations were undertaken with the Environment Agency and the Lead Local Flood Authority to agree the discharge of surface water and suitably treated foul water to watercourse via existing / new outfall structures. Surface water storage solutions negotiated and agreed with the LLFA included the use of SuDS and above ground storage as a far more economical alternative to below ground storage.
