The construction of a new school on an existing site underlain by shallow mine workings. The superstructure was designed as a hybrid portal / braced frame construction which allowed for efficient design of internal classroom spaces whilst achieving clear efficient spans across a large full height internal atrium along with an attached sports hall. The foundations consisted of a reinforced concrete raft construction with grouting of the shallow coal mine workings being carried out below the building footprint.
