Unity Community Primary School, Salford

The construction of a new school comprising a two storey steel frame with a composite floor deck and lightweight metal deck roof. Lateral stability of the building is provided by a mixture of braced bays and steel frames. The ground floor was constructed in sections to suit the existing site topography. The majority of the floor construction utilised a ground bearing slab on filled ground improved by the installation of vibro-stone columns. In addition to this, precast suspended slabs have been utilised spanning onto sub-floor walls supported by continuous strip foundations. The sub structure incorporated passive gas protection measures. The project also incorporated remodelling of the existing school with remedial works to key structural elements. The surface water drainage discharge was restricted to greenfield run off rates to prevent flooding from extreme storm events, with attenuation utilising below ground storage crates.
