The re-modelling of an existing office complex involved repurposing of the open air triangular courtyard, enclosed by three office wings, into a usable open plan space. The structural alterations included the introduction of three new walkways to the perimeter of the courtyard at first and second floor levels consisting of SHS posts and RHS beams to tie in with the architectural vision. Lateral stability of the retrofitted structure was provided by the existing structure. Above the new open plan ground floor space, an ETFE roof structure was provided – Integra worked closely with the specialist designer to ensure that the supporting steelwork structure was sufficiently stiff to control deformation whilst provision of sliding connections ensured minimal stresses were transferred into the ETFE structure from horizontal building loads. As a main architectural feature of the refurbishment, two exposed columns were designed to support a high level I-beam sat beneath the ETFE roof structure. The design of the ground floor slab required careful consideration as exposed concrete was the preferred architectural finish. Accordingly, careful coordination of joint positions and strategic placement of alpha joints ensured that the slab was aesthetically pleasing yet sufficiently durable.
